Treatment Services
At NESCA, we first seek to establish with a child’s parents a clear understanding of the nature
of the challenges being experienced by the child and the types of support that will be
most helpful. We strongly believe that the optimal treatment plan involves not only direct teaching of
coping tools and compensatory strategies but also building supports at home and school.
- Individual Psychotherapy
Our psychotherapists are all trained and experienced neuropsychologists, which gives them unique insight
into the issues that confront children who have special needs and their parents. Furthermore, the
effectiveness of therapy often hinges on the ability of the therapist to understand how the child learns and
processes information, an area in which our therapists have considerable expertise. We provide both cognitive-behavioral
therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
- Mind/Body Integration Therapy
Many children respond most readily to body-centered approaches to treatment that emphasize developing an
awareness of their internal state (e.g. level of arousal, attentional focus) and behaviors. In
addition to learning self-monitoring skills, which often results in significant behavioral changes,
children are taught strategies for managing difficult emotions, modulating their physiological state, and
calming themselves when anxious or overwhelmed. Approaches include yoga, breathing techniques, visualization, and
positive “self-talk”, all of which are gaining increasing popularity in school systems.
This approach is extremely helpful for children with ADHD, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, and weak
self-regulatory skills (often seen in children with executive functioning disorders). Our mind-body integration
therapist is a certified special education teacher who has extensive experience helping children who have a
range of special needs through her seven years of working at The Academy for Physical and Social Development.
In addition, parents of children with special needs often benefit from this work not only for general stress
management but also as a tool for regulating their own emotional responses to children who present significant
parenting challenges.
- Parent Guidance
Our psychologists’ deep understanding of the needs of children and adolescents with learning and
developmental disabilities allows them to be highly effective in providing parent guidance. Many traditional
approaches to parenting are not helpful for children with special needs, and parents often find it difficult
to apply the advice and techniques offered in books about parenting a child with special needs. NESCA clinicians
are available to parents of children with special needs for short-term psycho-educational work or for
longer-term case management.
