NESCA Services

NESCA was created in September, 2007 by Dr. Ann Helmus, founder and co-director of the Children’s Evaluation Center (CEC) for ten years. The staff at NESCA is comprised of neuropsychologists, psychologists, special education teachers and other practitioners committed to providing the highest quality evaluation and treatment services for children with special needs related to learning, emotional or developmental challenges.

Evaluation Services
Comprehensive evaluations are generally requested in order to better understand why a child may be having difficulty meeting age-appropriate demands in school or at home or to monitor a child’s progress and course of development.

Treatment Services
At NESCA, we first seek to establish with a child’s parents a clear understanding of the nature of the challenges being experienced by the child and the types of support that will be most helpful. We strongly believe that the optimal treatment plan involves not only direct teaching of coping tools and compensatory strategies but also building supports at home and school.

Mind-Body Integration Services
NESCA now offers yoga-based instruction to both children and parents.

Working with children, Instructor Hannah Gould incorporates specific movements from “Brain Gym” (Dennison and Dennison, 1989) in addition to traditional yoga postures. Her sessions generally conclude with a period of relaxation during which Ms. Gould employs a variety of guided visualizations and meditations. These guided visualizations can help children to become deeply relaxed and fully engaged in listening and imagining. They can be used to specifically address anxiety around social interaction or schoolwork, to overcome fears, and to promote a sense of ease and self-confidence. In all sessions with all students, she aims to create a safe and successful experience while honoring the unique strengths and abilities of the individual child.

Transition Planning and Consultation Services
Transition is the process, ideally beginning at around age 14 and extending through high school graduation and beyond, by which an adolescent or young adult masters the life skills necessary to function independently in post-secondary school or the workplace. NESCA offers transition planning and consultation services led by Sandy Storer, LICSW, a former LEND Fellow with more than a decade of public school and private practice experience working with students with Asperger’s Syndrome and related disorders. While she has special expertise in that area, she also supports many other students with attentional, organizational or other learning challenges.
