Challenges Associated with Adoption
The developmental course of adopted children is often strongly influenced by what they experience before arriving in their "forever" home. Dr. Stephanie Monaghan-Blout, Psy.D., a senior clinician at NECSA, will talk about the learning, social and emotional challenges facing many adopted children and their parents as they move from childhood to adolescence. Dr. Monaghan-Blout worked for many years as an adolescent and family therapist before training as a pediatric neuropsychologist, specializing in the evaluation of children and adolescents with complex learning and emotional issues. She is a member of the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative (TLPI) and is working with that group on an interdisciplinary guide to trauma-sensitive evaluations.

Worcester Public Schools Professional Development Day
At a full-day training session for school psychologists and the combined staff
of the Learning Disabilities, Speech / Language and Autism Departments, Dr. Helmus
will discuss the learning styles of children with communication disorders including
non-verbal learning disability, along with classroom strategies, accommodations
and modifications appropriate for teaching them.

Dr. Ann Helmus to Speak at NEALS Conference April 29th, 2009
Dr. Helmus will be the featured speaker at the biannual meeting of NEALS, the Northeast
Association of Learning Specialists. She will discuss means of supporting students with
weak executive functioning with teachers and learning specialists working in independent
schools. Now in its tenth year, NEALS is the largest professional association for
Learning Specialists. The conference will take place at the Pike School
in Andover, MA, and is open to NEALS members only.
Ongoing Participation
Drs. Monaghan-Blout and Helmus have been participating in the Trauma and
Learning Policy Initiative, a collaborative effort between the Massachusetts
Advocates for Children and the Hale and Dorr Legal Services Center of
Harvard Law School, that involves a multi-disciplinary group of professionals who
are working together to better define the educational needs of children
who have been traumatized.
More Staff Community Outreach and Education
Our staff has become increasingly active in community outreach and education, with some
also having been invited to participate in the formulation of state government policy.
For example, Dr. Ann Helmus as been asked by the Massachusetts Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to serve on a committee of professionals
charged with updating what's known as a "technical assistance advisory" relating to the
education of children with neurological impairments, as defined by the federal
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
On March 19th, NESCA clinician Dr. Elizabeth Gatti will speak to parents at the Shady Hill
School in Cambridge, giving an overview of neuropsychological testing and its utility,
and discussing when and for whom testing may be appropriate.
Finally, Dr. Nancy Roosa has been selected to participate in the first-ever "Mayor's Summit
on Autism", sponsored by Mayor Thomas Menino, the Boston Public Schools and the Boston
Public Health Commission. The purpose of this all-day event, on April 3rd in Boston, is "to bring
together individuals for an inclusive dialogue to discuss and frame recommendations on policy,
advocacy and actions necessary to improve outcomes for all individuals with autism spectrum
disorders within the City of Boston, and to shape the agenda for next steps." Stakeholders involved
will include researchers, policy analysts, practitioners, funders, academicians, educators,
parents and community leaders.
